RAY HARFORD: OFFICIAL STATEMENT

RANGERS have denied national newspaper reports from this morning that suggest Ray Harford is no longer manager.

The reports alleged that Harford had been moved upstairs at Loftus Road, with Vinnie Jones and Iain Dowie taking over the managerial duties.

But R’s vice-chairman Nick Blackburn says:" It goes to show you can’t believe what you read in the papers. The reports are totally untrue. There was no emergency board meeting.

"There was a meeting on Monday evening to discuss how to fill the gap following the departure of chief executive Clive Berlin. In attendance were Simon Crane from Loftus Road Plc, club secretary Sheila Marson, academy director Chris Gieler, Ray Harford and myself. We just discussed the reorganisation of the club.

"Ray Harford has not become Director of Football, although he will assume some of Clive Berlin’s role. Ray’s still very much the manager of the club. He’s still in charge of coaching and training. And that will continue with help from Vinnie and Iain Dowie. So there is no change."

HARFORD: I'M STILL BOSS HERE

RAY HARFORD has confirmed that he is still very much the manager of Queens Park Rangers, despite newspaper reports which suggested he had been moved up to Director of Football.

Ray says:"Things haven’t changed. Where Clive Berlin was the contact if anyone wanted to talk about players, his job will now be shared by three other people. I’m going to undertake most of the football phone calls relating to players, Sheila Marson will do the players’ administration and the financial director will deal with the financial side of players’ contracts. So the three of us are bridging Clive’s position and the newspaper reports were not accurate."

The training ground at Twyford Avenue, Acton has been closed purely as a precautionary measure and as widely reported all fixtures this weekend are postponed .

QPR Official Site URGENT MESSAGE!!

RANGERS' MATCH with Sheffield United has been postponed due to a meningitis scare. The following is a message from the club.

- The Football League have given their authority for QPR to postpone their scheduled fixture against Sheffield United in Nationwide League Division One that was due to take place on Saturday 11 September 1999.

This is due to one QPR player who has today been confirmed with a diagnosis of meningitis, although it is not yet known which strain he has. A number of other QPR players are currently under observation having displayed symptoms similar to those of the confirmed case.

Simon Crane Chief Executive of QPR said, "The decision to postpone this fixture has been taken on the advice of medical professionals and is in the health and safety interests of the QPR playing squad, staff and fans and also those of Sheffield United Football Club."

Queens Park Rangers will provide further information as and when it becomes available.

QPR would urge all fans to keep hold of their tickets for the fixture as they will be valid for the rearranged date, details of which will be announced as soon as possible.

QPR Official Site - KULCSAR TEST RESULTS

QPR are very pleased to announce that the results of tests carried out on midfielder George Kulcsar have confirmed that the strain of meningitis from which he is suffering is the viral strain of the disease.

The other QPR players who were under observation after they had shown similar symptoms, Karl Ready and Matthews Rose, have been diagnosed with another form of virus which is not meningitis and their symptoms are improving. QPR will publish more information about their condition as and when it becomes available.

Our thoughts are with George, Karl and Matthew and their families at this time. The doctors who are caring for George will be advising us shortly of his recovery period.

The Football League sanctioned the postponement of QPR's fixture with Sheffield United when it became apparent that George Kulcsar had a confirmed case of meningitis and other players in the squad were showing symptoms. QPR would like to thank The Football League, Sheffield United and the fans for their help and understanding in this difficult matter.

The Meningitis Research Foundation have made the following statement in relation to viral meningitis;

"Viral meningitis is caused by many different viruses. It is not contagious (unlike bacterial meningitis) and most cases usually recover without extensive medical treatment."

QPR Official Site - LOFTUS ROAD RELIEF

QPR would like to reiterate that Saturday's scheduled game against Sheffield United has been postponed following the events of the past few days. We will of course let you know the rearranged date of the game as soon as we can, along with the new date for the Stockport County away fixture.

Jim Frayling QPR Brand Manager said 'It has been a very difficult time for us all at the club - fans, staff and players. All our thoughts have been with George and his family and we are mightily relieved to hear that his condition is not as bad as we feared. On behalf of the club and all the fans I would like to wish George a speedy recovery'.

Although the training ground has been shut, Loftus Road Stadium has remained open throughout the last few days to deal with the situation. The club have been inundated with enquiries from the media concerning the suspected outbreak of meningitis. The Loftus Road Chief Executive, Simon Crane, has been fielding a lot of those calls and he had this to say after a very hectic couple of days;

"We've been very concerned for George and the entire playing squad throughout this time and are very relieved that the test results produced this afternoon have shown George to be suffering from the viral strain of the disease and all other members of the playing staff to be meningitis free.

"It is important now to care for George and his family and get the club back on track so that Gerry and the squad can resume the Nationwide League Division One campaign. I'd like to thank all the fans of our club and football in general for their extraordinary support of George, Karl and Matthew."

KULCSAR BACK HOME

QPR is pleased to report that midfielder George Kulcsar - diagnosed with viral meningitis last week - returned home to his family at the weekend.

He is said to be doing very well considering all he and his family have been through in the last week.

On behalf of George, the club would like to thank the thousands of fans who have passed on messages of goodwill and support in the last few days.

The QPR training ground in Acton has now been reopened and the first team squad are back in training today in preparation for the local derby with Fulham this weekend.

QPR are working with Sheffield United and The Football League to find a suitable date for the postponed fixture. We hope to announce this date in the near future.

In appreciation of all the help they have provided during the last week, the club is organising a collection in aid of The Meningitis Research Foundation at the rearranged fixture.

The Foundation will also feature in the matchday programme, explaining the facts about meningitis and all their work in researching the disease.

KULCSAR ON ROAD TO RECOVERY

THE GOOD NEWS from Loftus Road today is that George Kulcsar is recovering well from his bout of viral meningitis. Meanwhile, it's business as usual at the training ground.

Loftus Road Plc chief executive Simon Crane explains: "George Kulcsar is doing very well.

"He was released from hospital over the weekend and he's back home with his family. George is a fit, athletic sportsman but the advice is he needs to take it easy.

"Meanwhile, Queens Park Rangers have reopened the training ground as of this morning.

"The first team and Academy are back in training and it's full steam ahead for Saturday's London derby versus Fulham.

"Once the diagnosis came through that George Kulcsar had viral meningitis rather than meningococcal, the medical professionals expressed no desire to check out the training ground.

"It is an interested point to note that 10% of the U.K. population carry the viral meningitis strain in their bodies at all times.

"George would appear to be one of the unlucky people who carried the strain and it then came to the fore.

"We've also just announced that the rearranged home game against Sheffield United(date to be announced) will see a bucket collection for the Meningitis Foundation.

"This is just to raise the awareness of the perils of meningitis and also to raise some much-needed funds for this very important charity."

QPR Official Site - September 14. 1999 - GEORGE TAKING IT EASY

GEORGE KULCSAR has given his first interview since the meningitis scare last week.

George is back at home, sitting on the sofa watching television. He's been told to take things easy by the Rangers doctor and has been cheered by the flood of goodwill messages from Rangers fans.

George says: "I'm feeling a lot better now with just the occasional headaches which keep returning. The meningitis knocked me back a bit but I'm on the road to recovery.

"I had the initial scare of not knowing what the illness was. I felt pretty bad. After consulting the doctor, we decided to get myself off to hospital.

"I went in on Wednesday at 1pm and they carried out lumber puncture tests over a couple of days.

"They discovered that I had viral meningitis and not the bacterial strain, which is more serious.

"So that was a big relief all round - for my family as well. Everyone says that viral meningitis is not as bad, but I thought it was bad enough! I just don't go into hospital for the sake of it.

"I was a bit shocked by all the publicity. I personally think it got blown out of proportion, but sometimes that happens.

"It shocked my wife more because she came to visit me at the hospital one morning and she left thinking everything was all right.

"Then she got in the car and heard a radio news bulletin which said 'George Kulcsar is in intensive care'.

"I wasn't. I was only in isolation, but as you can imagine it freaked the missus out a little bit.

"My little boy went to nursery one morning only to be told 'You can't come in because your father's got meningitis'.

"Obviously there was a bit of a scare there, but people don't realise that there are two forms of meningitis, so I suppose better safe than sorry, which I can understand.

"I'd like to thank everyone who has sent get well messages. I've got plenty of cards, flowers and chocolates here at home.

"So on behalf of the family and myself, I'd like to thank everyone involved."

George hopes to be back in training in a couple of weeks.

ANTTI HEINOLA goes into hospital on Friday for a cruciate ligament operation. Antti injured his knee in the pre-season friendly at Luton Town. All Rangers fans will wish Antti a speedy recovery.

ALL 5500 tickets for Saturday's local derby at Fulham have now completely sold out.
